Tambeæ

Tambeæ = Tambae was an ancient city and bishopric of Roman North Africa which remains only as Latin Catholic titular see.

History

Tambeae is located near Aïn-Beida and Henchir-Baboucha in modern Tunisia. It was, like many cities in the Roman province of Byzacena, important enough to become a suffragan of the metropolitan of Carthage, but would fade completely, plausibly at the seventh century advent of Islam.

Five of its bishops are historically documented :

  • Secondianus attended the Council of Carthage in 256, called by Saint Cyprianus on the lapsi (Christians accepting forced pagan sacrifices to avoid martyrdom)
  • Gemellius participated in the Council of Cabarsussi, held in 393 by the Maximianists, a dissident sect of Donatism, and signed the acts
  • The Council of Carthage in 411, uniting all its Northern African bishops, was attended by the Catholic bishop Sopater, whose side prevailed, and by
    • his schismatic Donatist counterpart Faustinus, whose side's heresy was condemned as such
  • Servus Dei intervened at the Council of Carthage in 484 called by Arian king Huneric of the Vandal Kingdom, and was exiled afterward like most Catholic bishops.

Titular see

The diocese was nominally restored in 1933 as Latin Titular bishopric of Tambeæ (Latin spelling) / Tambee (Curiate Italian) / Tambeæn(sis) (Latin adjective).

It has had the following incumbents, so far of the fitting Episcopal (lowest) rank :

  • Pedro Aguilera Narbona (1966.11.21 – death 1968.01.23) as emeritus; previously Bishop of Iquique (Chile) (1941.09.15 – retired 1966.11.21)
  • Francisco Raval Cruces (1968.04.02 – 1970.03.04) as Auxiliary Bishop of Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan (Philippines) (1968.04.02 – 1970.03.04); later Bishop of Ilagan (Philippines) (1970.03.04 – 1973.08.22), Metropolitan Archbishop of Zamboanga (Philippines) (1973.08.22 – retired 1994.12.07), died 1997
  • Blessed Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Goldámez (1970.04.25 – 1974.10.15) as Auxiliary Bishop of Archdiocese of San Salvador (El Salvador) (1970.04.25 – 1974.10.15), also Secretary General of Episcopal Secretariat of Central America and Panama (1971 – 1972); later Bishop of Santiago de María (El Salvador) (1974.10.15 – 1977.02.03), Metropolitan Archbishop of above San Salvador (1977.02.03 – murdered 1980.03.24)
  • Angélico Sândalo Bernardino (1974.12.12 – 2000.04.19) as Auxiliary Bishop of Archdiocese of São Paulo (Brazil) (1974.12.12 – 2000.04.19); later Bishop of Blumenau (Brazil) (2000.04.19 – retired 2009.02.18)

gollark: People want to be able to know the IPs for things still, I guess.
gollark: Generally you won't talk to my nameserver directly but to a recursive DNS resolver which then looks it up. The nice thing about DNS is that even on internal network-type things, DNS queries will quite likely be propagated to the outside world.
gollark: That nameserver parses the DNS query and does stuff based on its contents.
gollark: If something wants to get records for a subdomain, they talk to my nameserver.
gollark: I can delegate subdomains of it to have their own nameservers.
