Early life

Oyando was born on February 26, 1984 in Nairobi, Kenya. She was born into a musical family. Her father, Maurice Oyando, was a music producer and had his NextLevel Studio in the family home. In the studio, the elder Oyando worked with the likes of Mighty King Kong, Eric Wainaina and RKay, giving her daughter the chance to rub shoulders with some of the big names in the Kenyan music industry at the time.[1]

Career

At the age of 17, Oyando, together with friends Alma Midayi Tuju and Yma, formed a music group called Talma. Their debut album Jambo Rafiki was released in 2001 and won an Emmy Award in the same year.

After graduating from college, Oyando took up a three-month internship at Nation Media Group. After the expiration of her internship period, she kept going back to work until she was appointed as the host of a radio show titled Top 10 Till 10.[2]

At Homeboyz Radio she hosted a morning show known as The Juice. Since October 22, 2016, she has been the host of the One Love show on Citizen TV that runs from 4pm to 5pm on Saturdays.

She also worked on Easy FM (now Nation FM) as a radio DJ. She also had a stint as the host of Showbiz on NTV and has worked as an MTV VJ.

In April 2020, Oyando left Homeboyz Radio to join Radio Jambo to host a show called Reggae Wave that runs 5 days a week.[3]

Personal life

Talia married film and television director Ezekiel Onyango in a traditional ceremony in 2010. The couple has a son, Lyric Onyango, born in October, 2012.[4]

She is also a big fan of reggae music and most of the shows she has hosted on TV and radio are reggae shows. In 2018, she took a trip to Jamaica where she got to spend time with some of the top reggae artistes in the world. To her fans, she is known as The Night Nurse, a sobriquet from a Gregory Isaacs song of a similar name.

Oyando is a fitness enthusiast who regularly posts photos of herself in the gym in her social media pages.

In an interview on Ebru TV in 2017, Oyando revealed that she had been a victim of bullying while in high school. This made her change schools three times without telling her parents why.
