"Tada Nakitaku Naru no" (ただきたくなるの, lit. "I Just Feel Like Crying") is a song recorded by Japanese singer Miho Nakayama. It was released as a single by King Records on February 9, 1994. It is the theme song to the TBS drama series Moshimo Negai ga Kanau Nara (もしも願いが叶うなら), starring Nakayama herself.[1] Nakayama performed the song at the 45th Kōhaku Uta Gassen,[2] marking her seventh and last appearance on the show. In 2015, Nakayama performed the song for the first time in 18 years on national TV during the 2015 FNS Music Festival, earning the most-watched segment of the broadcast.[3]

Background

"Tada Nakitaku Naru no" was co-written by Yurie Kokubu and Miho Nakayama and composed by Masaki Iwamoto. The song is composed in the key of B flat major and set to a tempo of 87 beats per minute.[4] Nakayama's vocals span from G3 to D5. Lyrically, it tells the story of a woman feeling left behind by her friends who are getting married one by one.

Cover versions

In 1995, Yurie Kokubu self-covered the song for the album Akogare. In 2010, Yūzō Imai recorded a cover of the song for the album Kimi to Aruita Jikan. In 2012, Kim Jeong-hoon recorded a cover of the song for his first covers album, Voice. In 2013, Shoko Inoue recorded a rendition of the song for the 1990s covers album Kaisōroku: Calling 90's. In 2015, Ko Shibasaki recorded a cover of "Tada Nakitaku Naru no" for her first covers album, Kō Utau.[5] In 2016, May J. recorded a cover of the song for her third covers album, Sweet Song Covers.[6]

Chart performance

"Tada Nakitaku Naru no" debuted at number 3 on the Oricon Singles Chart with 141,000 copies sold in its first week.[7] The song stalled at number 2 the following week, with 106,000 copies sold, kept off the number-one spot by B'z's "Don't Leave Me".[8] It slid to number 3 the next week, logging sales of 88,000 copies.[9] "Tada Nakitaku Naru no" finally reached the top of the chart on its fourth charting week, selling 98,000 units on that week.[10] The single spent the following two weeks at number 2, behind "Hey Hey Ōki ni Maido Ari" by SMAP and "Gambaranakucha ne" by Lindberg,[11] respectively, selling a combined total of 202,000 singles.[12] The single remained in the top ten for an additional four weeks and dropped off the top twenty two weeks later.[13][14]

"Tada Nakitaku Naru no" charted in the top 100 for 18 weeks, selling a reported total of 1,048,000 copies during its run and becoming Nakayama's best-selling solo single,[15] as well as the 100th single in Oricon history to break the million sales mark.[16] The song was the number-one selling single for March 1994 and ranked at number 17 on the year-end Oricon Singles Chart.[17][18]
