Biography
Suh sang in a choir for Los Angeles-based KTE radio when she was a child, performing Korean folk songs and American pop and children's songs.[1] Her parents were Korean immigrants from Seoul who came to the United States as students in the 1960s.[1] She attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, graduating in 1997 and The Mountain School in Vershire, VT. As a high schooler, she self-released a six-track EP and sold several hundred copies of it.[2] She then attended Brown University, where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in English.[2] As a college student, she continued performing, and eventually drew the attention of Charles Koppelman and Don Rubin.[3]
She signed with Epic Records in 2003, and her debut album, Susie Suh, was produced by Glen Ballard and released on Epic in 2005. Five songs from that album were used on the TV series One Tree Hill, among them "Recognition", "All I Want" and "Light on My Shoulder".
"Shell," from her self-titled release, was featured on the soundtrack of the 2005 film Must Love Dogs. A one-minute crop of it was bundled with Sony Ericsson W800 mobile phones.
Following her debut, Suh released The Bakman Tapes, Pt. 1 – EP, 3 songs in 2009 with the full album The Bakman Tapes being released in 2011.
"Here with Me" was featured on The Blacklist television series, Season 1, episode 3; Wujing (No.84) (2013). In 2015, "Good Times" was featured on the final episode of the second season of NBC's The Night Shift. It was also retired in the CW's mini series Containment.
Her music has been compared to that of Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann.[3] Suh cites Joni Mitchell and Beth Gibbons among her influences.[2]
