History
In 2003, Sumner Community School District decided to whole grade share with a nearby school. The Sumner Community School District began talks with nearby town and rival Fredericksburg Community School District about possibly joining in order to better serve the students of each community. Much like Sumner, Fredericksburg was experiencing a large drop in enrollment was looking to join another school district. That year the two districts agreed to grade share.[5] The first proposed name was "BCF," after Bremer, Chickasaw, and Fayette counties, which Sumner-Fredericksburg serves. Ultimately it was called Sumner-Fredericksburg High.[6]
2004 was the first year of the new Sumner-Fredericksburg High School and Sumner-Fredericksburg Middle School. 210 of the high school students came from Sumner CSD while 115 came from Fredericksburg CSD.[7] Sumner-Fredericksburg High School is located in Sumner along with Durant Elementary School.
The Sumner-Fredericksburg Middle School is located in the former Fredericksburg High School building. The community of Fredericksburg also has its own elementary school, Fredericksburg Elementary School. The students from both towns voted on the mascot and colors and chose Cougars to be the mascot and the colors: Navy Blue, Forest Green, and Vegas Gold. The districts decided to join the Upper Iowa Conference which boasted Sumner's rival North Fayette and Fredericksburg's Turkey Valley. Together they have made their own rivals of North Fayette, Turkey Valley, and Wapsie Valley. As schools in the Upper Iowa Conference continued to shrink and join together Sumner-Fredericksburg received an invitation to join the North Iowa Cedar League. In 2014, Sumner-Fredericksburg joined the North Iowa Cedar League, East, where it joined schools of similar size like Wapsie Valley. Sumner-Fredericksburg High School is known for its outstanding Sensation Show Choir and volleyball team which has gone to state or a regional final in seven out of the eleven years of SF existence.
