Plot

Suhani Srivastav, an average looking yet free-spirited and kindhearted girl comes from a middle-class family in Allahabad. Her best friend Soumya Ahuja is a beautiful and slightly vain girl. Yuvraj Birla, a rich boy who values beauty above all else falls in love with Soumya.

Yuvraj confesses his love to Soumya who is shocked since she had assumed he loved Suhani because of being in love with Krishna Mathur. Soumya marries him against her mother's wishes but his mother Latika and sister Rakhi hate her causing frequent arguments between the couple.

Desperate to settle Suhani into a comfortable household, her father Pankaj works up a plan to blackmail Yuvraj into marrying Suhani and succeeds though his grandmother Chandrakala hates Suhani thinking her beauty is enough.

Yuvraj's sisters-in-law Menaka and Ragini convince Chandrakala to bring Soumya into Yuvraj's life. Suhani brings Soumya believing Krishna tortures her. Chandrakala, Ragini and Menaka try to get Soumya and Yuvraj together. Soumya falls in love with Yuvraj and confesses but he reveals he now has no feelings for her.

Adamant, Soumya continues her efforts. Yuvraj discovers her intentions. Suhani finds out and is heartbroken but works closely with Yuvraj to get Soumya back with Krishna and eventually succeeds. She leaves the house believing there is no love in her marriage.

However, Suhani agrees to return when a man named Mr. Saxena threatens the family. She succeeds in saving the family and its reputation. Chandrakala's close relative Rohan, a lawyer falls for Suhani. They decide to marry but Yuvraj realises he loves Suhani. Rohan steps back.

Suhani's sister Bhavna gets widowed as her husband Amit Joshi dies. Yuvraj's cousin Sharad marries Bhavna and brings her and her baby. Chandrakala tries to create rift between Suhani and Bhavna. At an outing, a young girl saves Suhani's life. Suhani discovers her being Yuvraj's long-lost sister Gauri.

Suhani and Yuvraj work hard to prove Gauri's identity. As Gauri falls in love with Suhani's brother Aditya and they marry, Suhani and Yuvraj decide to use a surrogate through a woman Barbie who tries to separate them and later abducts Suhani who everyone presume dead.

Chandrakala forces Yuvraj to marry Barbie. Suhani returns and reveals Barbie is faking her pregnancy who is thrown out of the house. Suhani and Soumya are revealed to be pregnant. Barbie and her brother Saajan plant a bomb in the Birla house. Krishna and Gauri die.

Seven years later

Suhani has twins Yuvaan and Yuvaani. Because of separation, Yuvaan lives with Suhani and Yuvaani lives with Yuvraj. Soumya lives with the Birlas with her daughter who is also named Krishna. Yuvraj left Suhani holding her responsible for the bomb blast because she had let Saajan stay.

Suhani has become a successful fashion designer, discovers that Yuvaani is alive and visits the Birlas. Yuvraj and Suhani decide to remarry for the sake of their children. On the wedding day, Chandrakala replaces Yuvraj with a man named Sambhav Salvi and Suhani marries him in a state of shock. Chandrakala tries to kill Suhani.

Yuvraj tries to find the culprit but Sambhav protects Chandrakala. Then it is revealed the real culprit is Chandrakala's evil twin sister Lavanya who was keeping the real Chandrakala in captivity. Suhani exposes Lavanya who is sent to jail.

Not knowing Sambhav's role in the conspiracy, he remains married to Suhani and mistreats her. He threatens her with harming Yuvraj to make her obey him. Yuvraj discovers his plan and rescues Suhani, but Sambhav shoots him in the leg and rapes Suhani. Suhani and Yuvraj burn him alive.

Twenty years later

Suhani lives in Goa with Yuvraj's mother Pratima and Krishna. Yuvraj is in jail for Sambhav's murder and returns in disguise. Suhani has a son with Sambhav, named Sayyam who comes to avenge Sambhav's death. Yuvraj's true identity is revealed. Sayyam tries to kill him on several occasions but Suhani intervenes each time.

Sayyam forces Suhani to get him married to an unwilling Krishna who has been in love with Yuvaan but Suhani is forced to relent. Krishna starts detesting Suhani who gets Sayyam's former girlfriend Baby married to Yuvaan.

It is revealed Sambhav is alive, disguised as Yuvraj. The real Yuvraj is held in captivity by Sambav. Suhani and Chandrakala discover this. They join to free Yuvraj and expose Sambhav. Sayyam tries to kill Sambhav but is stopped by Yuvraj and Suhani.

Gradually, Sayyam and Krishna develop feelings for each other. Yuvaan is unhappy having Sayyam living with them and tries to have him leave. Later, he accepts Sayyam and realises he has made a mistake by marrying Baby. He tries to win back Krishna's love and finds out Krishna is falling for Saiyyam.

Yuvaan tries to create rift between Saiyyam and Krishna but it brings them closer. Baby tries to create misunderstandings between Chandrakala and Suhani. Everyone work together to deal with Baby. Krishna and Sayyam get intimate for the first time. Krishna becomes pregnant.

Baby kills Yuvaan. Suhani tries to get rid of Baby but is accused of killing Yuvaan. Baby blackmails Yuvraj to marry her. Suhani is heartbroken and Krishna miscarries. Yuvraj and Suhani join hands to solve the situation.

Baby shoots Yuvraj to death and gets arrested. Suhani is revealed to be pregnant with Yuvraj's child and gives it to Krishna and Sayyam. Chandrakala accepts Suhani. The whole family gets together and Suhani remembers Yuvraj.

Production

Development

The show was produced by Panorama Entertainment, Suzana Ghai and started on 9 June 2014.[10] The show replaced the popular show Ek Ghar Banaunga.[11]

Talking about the show, Nikhil Madhok, Senior Vice President, Marketing & Programming Strategy, Star Plus said, “With Suhaani Si Ek Ladki, we hope to further strengthen our bond with the youth. Over the last one year, Star Plus' viewership amongst all demographics has increased significantly on the back of fresh engaging content. However, progressive young women have forged a especially strong bond with us. This show will resonate with them, highlighting their dreams and aspirations and a take on love that they will find refreshing.”[12]

Speaking about her role, Rajshri Pandey said, "Suhani is simple, innocent, pure at heart. She finds good in everyone and loves her family but what makes her different from other characters is that she is funny, cracks jokes and does not cry. Suhani is soft spoken but gives back to people, if they are mean to her, she sweetly tells them off."[13] Neha Yadav stated taking inspiration from Kareena Kapoor's character Geet in Jab We Met for her role of Soumya.[14] Sahil Mehta made his television debut with the series after his bollywood career did not succeed.[15]

Casting

Due to the twenty years leap in September 2016, lead Sahil Mehta quit as he refused ageing.[16] But on popular demand, he returned back. However in February 2017, he quit with his character being killed.[17] Owing to the same reason, lead Neha Yadav and Debashree Biswas also quit[16][8] while Ankita Sharma was roped as adult Krishna.[18] As she met with an accident day before the shoot, Sristi Jain was immediately cast. Sharmin Kazi and Mridul Kabir were cast as Yuvaani and Yuvaan.[18][19] After Mehta's exit, Gaurav Mukesh quit in March 2017.[20]
