Stratford Summer Music Festival

Stratford Summer Music is a music festival in Stratford Ontario that features over 100 artists every year.[1] Artists that have performed at the festival include pianists Jan Lisiecki and Simone Dinnerstein, Angela Hewitt , Buffy Sainte-Marie[2], Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Measha Brueggergosman, James Westman, Ben Heppner, Ron Sexsmith and the Annex String Quartet.[3]

History

An earlier festival by the same name operated in Stratford from 1980 to 1984. The festival was founded by pianist Peter Elyakim Taussig who was the first artistic director. John A. Miller, who is the current Artistic Producer, was the original general manager.

Stratford Summer Music started again independently in 2001, with John A. Miller as artistic producer.[4] He will be retiring in 2018.

Recent concerts

  • The Canadian Arabic Orchestra and Choir performed at the opening of the 16th season of Stratford Summer Music(2016)[5]
  • A 13-year-old Jazz pianist Joey Alexander played to a full house (2016)[6]
  • Mobile Homme, Les Tambours/The Drummers by Transe Express, France, flew over Stratford Market Square (2017)[7]
  • Canada's National Youth Orchestra and National Youth Choir of Canada sang with Lt.-Gov Elizabeth Dowdeswell in attendance (2017)[8]
