Stephenson High School is nestled within the surrounding neighborhoods of old historic Stone Mountain. The main campus sprawls over five acres with the addition of an exclusive Freshman Academy Building equipped with its own computer labs and cafeteria. With an enrollment of 1571, SHS is one of the largest of DeKalb County School District's 21 high schools.
Facility and curriculum
SHS has a 500-seat theatre equipped with two full-size dressing rooms, computer-operated lights and backdrops, an orchestra pit with hydraulic lift, and a catwalk. The Atlanta Theatre Organ Society donated and installed an organ with full piping. Stephenson is one of three schools in the country to house such an organ, and uses it for musicals and concerts.
Students study horticulture, landscaping, and botany in an interactive Education/Outdoor Classroom that provides hands-on learning and instruction. The classroom includes a waterfall, two greenhouses, benches, and tables. A park located within walking distance of the campus also gives math and science teachers the opportunity to provide interdisciplinary instruction.
The school offers a broadcast and media production curriculum. Students practice what they learn through three hands-on program components: JAG 8 News, the television voice of Stephenson High; Jaguar Enterprises, which contracts to shoot, edit and produce programs for interested community members; and Jaguar Records, a recording label.
