Boland was employed as Foreign Exchange Manager at Rolls-Royce Aerospace, Deputy Treasurer at Bell Group and Asset Treasurer at Bricom.[3][5] He worked for Robert Holmes à Court in the 1980s.[2] Working at ICL from 1990 to '97,[1] he became involved in the technology sector, holding positions including Finance Director, Director of Treasury & Tax and Group Treasurer.[3][5] In 1997, he moved to Acorn Computers, ultimately spun-out as Element 14.[3][5][6] Broadcom acquired Element 14 in 2000 for $640M, with Boland becoming Vice President of its DSL business unit.[3][5] He has been a director of ARM Holdings[7]

Icera was co-founded by Boland in 2002 and acquired by Nvidia in 2011 for $367M plus an undisclosed staff retention amount. In 2006 Boland stated that the flotation was planned for "probably 2008".[8]

Boland was reported in April 2013 as being appointed CEO of wireless technology startup Neul.[9][10][11][12][13][14] From January 2014, he has also been Chairman of NMI, the UK national association for companies in the electronics systems sector.

gollark: There are still all kinds of side channel attacks, but eh.
gollark: Oh, if I just wanted to deny access to basically everything it would be *fairly* easy.
gollark: This is even crazier. If I return the whole environment table from `pcall` it's out-of-sandbox, but if I check the return value *in* the function it somehow breaks?
gollark: Sometimes sandboxing makes me want to just run all the computing on a CCEmuX instance in the cloud™ or something and make potatOS devices mostly dumb terminals.
gollark: Well, I patched *that*, and that makes sense since it actually deals with environments.
