St. John the Baptist Cathedral, Chachapoyas

The St. John the Baptist [1] (Spanish: Catedral de San Juan Bautista ) also called Chachapoyas Cathedral Is a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church. It is located in the main square of Chachapoyas, the capital of the province of Chachapoyas in the department of Amazonas in the north of the South American country of Peru.[2]

On June 2, 1843, the cathedral was granted the rank of Cathedral. It is the mother church of the Diocese of Chachapoyas (Diocese Chachapoyasensis) which was created in 1803 as diocese of Maynas and was renamed in 1843 by the bull "Ex Sublimi Petri" of Pope Gregory XVI.

The old building was rebuilt in 1928 and then modernized in the 70's but was remodeled once again in 2010 giving it back its original style.[3]

It is under the pastoral responsibility of Bishop Emiliano Antonio Cisneros Martínez
