Sparta Saints

The Sparta Saints were a minor league baseball based in Sparta, Georgia that played in the Class D Georgia State League (GSL) in 1948 and 1949. The team folded following the 1949 season.[1]

History

Sparta first began play as a charter member in the reformed in the six-team Class D Georgia State League 1948.[2]

In their first season of 1948, Sparta finished 81–37 under manager Woody Bottoms to win the Georgia State League pennant. Sparta defeated the Eastman Dodgers 3 games to 2 in the playoffs, before losing to the Fitzgerald Pioneers in the championship series 4 games to 3.[3][4][5]

In their second and final season in 1949, the unaffiliated Saints finished 69–68 under managers Bottoms and Parnell Ruark. Sparta drew 33,436 and 27,191 in their two seasons.[4][6]

The Saints franchise was replaced by the Jesup Bees in the 1950 Georgia State League. The Georgia State League folded after the 1956 season.[7]

The ballpark

The Saints played at the Sparta Baseball Park in Sparta, Georgia. Sparta Baseball Park had a capacity of 2,000. Today, the ballpark is used by youth teams and the grandstands remain.[8][9]
