South Tama County High School

The district operates South Tama County Elementary School in Tama, South Tama County Middle School in Toledo, and South Tama County High School in Tama.[3]

History

On July 2018, Jared Smith became the superintendent.[4] He previously was the principal of Muscatine High School.[5] He received a two-year contract renewal in February 2020.[6]

In 2020 there had an election to pass a school bond that would rebuild the middle school as an attachment to the high school building in Tama, which would mean the end of use of the Toledo building. Unofficial results as of March 6, 2020 stated that the vote was 53.9% in favor on a margin of 844–722; it failed due to the percentage of voters being below the required 60%.[7] There was opposition from figures who believed that the district did not give sufficient details about the project.[8]

Later that month the district was considering another vote.[9]

Service area

The district has a total of 262 square miles (680 km2) of area.[10] Almost all of the district is in Tama County while a small portion is in Poweshiek County. The district serves, in addition to Tama, Chelsea, Montour, Toledo, and Vining.[11] It also serves the Meskwaki Settlement, a Native American settlement, and other areas.[10] Typically, Meskwaki Nation students attend the K-8 tribal school Meskwaki Settlement School and move on to South Tama County High School.[12]

Enrollment

As of 2020, the district as a whole had over 1,500 students.[10]

gollark: It's great!
gollark: I would happily *not* help "improve text to speech" stuff if it means being CONSTANTLY LISTENED TO.
gollark: Oh, and being paid for it.
gollark: Ideally people actually submitting it *willingly*, and with data which isn't stupidly personal.
gollark: Lots of money being spent on it? Competent employees? Good AI research?
