Society for Developmental Biology

The Society for Developmental Biology (SDB) is a professional society for basic scientists and physicians around the world whose research is focused on the study of the developmental biology and embryology.

History

The Society for Developmental Biology (SDB) was founded in 1939 to promote the field of developmental biology and to advance the understanding of developmental biology at all levels. SDB is a non-profit professional society dedicated to advancement of the field of developmental biology. Over recent decades, the SDB has grown to nearly 2000 members, and has evolved to provide an international forum for research, education and career development in developmental biology.

The stated mission of the society is to:

  1. Foster excellence in research and education in developmental biology.
  2. Provide advice and resources on careers in developmental biology.
  3. Provide information for the public on relevant topics in developmental biology.
  4. Provide a communication hub for all developmental biologists.

The Society is associated with the monthly peer reviewed journal, Developmental Biology.

Awards

The Society for Developmental Biology inaugurated the Edwin Grant Conklin Medal in 1995 to honor the biologist Edwin Conklin.[1]

An annual Lifetime Achievement Award was begun in 2000.[2]

Annual Meeting

The Society holds an annual meeting that is attended by scientists from around the world. The 68th annual meeting in 2009 will be held in San Francisco, CA. In addition to the annual meetings, specific regions around the U.S. hold regional meetings.

Past Meetings

The first symposium on Development and Growth was sponsored by the editors of Growth, and it was held in August 1939, at North Truro. Subsequent meetings have been held in a variety of cities throughout the world. A selection of recent meetings are summarized in the table.
