Plot

Ratna is a live-in maid employed by Ashwin. Ashwin has recently returned to Mumbai from New York after breaking off his engagement there. Ratna is a widow and who dreams of becoming a tailor.

Ashwin asks Ratna to encourage her sister to focus more on her education, but Ratna soon finds out that her sister is getting married and will not complete her education after all.

Ratna leaves to go to her sister's wedding in her hometown. Ashwin gives her money as a gift for her sister. Ashwin also encourages her to follow her dreams and gifts her a sewing machine, which she later uses to stitch a suit for her sister. While Ratna is away, Ashwin calls to check in with her, but his attention makes Ratna uncomfortable.

Upon her return to work for Ashwin, the dynamic between them changes, when Ashwin sees Ratna dancing in the building for Ganesh Visarjan. Ashwin and Ratna fall in love and form a relationship, despite the realization that their romance, between boss and employee, is forbidden. Ratna shows Ashwin the place on the building rooftop where she often goes to reflect on her thoughts.

Despite their love, their situation becomes complicated. Ashwin's friend discourages him from being in a relationship with a maid and reminds him of the social repercussions of such a relationship. Ratna, as the maid, is asked to cook for a party in honor of Ashwin's mother. Ashwin unintentionally makes Ratna uncomfortable by asking if he should wait to enjoy the meal with her, provoking the scorn of other household employees who brutally mock Ratna.

Following this humiliation, Ratna decides to quit her job and leaves, despite Ashwin's request that she stay. Ratna explains that they can't be together because of their class differences. Ratna moves to her sister's house, while Ashwin tells his father that he will be moving back to New York. Ratna gets hired by Ashwin's friend as a fashion designer, likely because Ashwin pulled some strings. Ratna goes to Ashwin's house to see him but finds that the door is locked. She goes to the rooftop and hears Ashwin's call, and she responds by addressing him by his first name.
