Shi Islet

Shi Islet (Chinese: 獅嶼; pinyin: Shī Yǔ; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: sai-sū; lit.: 'lion islet')[2][3] (also Shi Yu[4], Shih Yü[5], Shiyu, Shiyu Islet,[6] and Lion Islet[7]) is an islet located northwest of Lesser Kinmen (Lieyu) in Lieyu Township, Kinmen County (Quemoy), Fujian Province, Republic of China (Taiwan).[8][7][9] The name of the islet was changed to the current name in 1960. The islet was originally named '鼠嶼' (pinyin: Shǔ Yǔ).[9] Military personnel are stationed on Shi Islet.[6]

History

The islet appeared in the 2010 Japanese movie Liar Game: The Final Stage.[6]

At around 4 PM on August 19, 2016, a 23 year old Chinese man landed on Shi Islet after rowing from Xiamen Island (Amoy) on a floating piece of polystyrene and was immediately arrested by the Shi Islet defense forces.[10][11]

On July 23, 2019, Ho Cheng (賀政), the new leader of the ROC Army Kinmen Defense Command (陸軍金門防衛指揮部), visited the soldiers on Shi Islet and Menghu Islet.[12][13]
