Shavelsky Uyezd

Shavelsky Uyezd (Russian: Шавельский уезд) was one of the counties of the Russian Empire. The seat was in Shavli.

History

Established 1795 under Vilna Governorate. Transferred in 1843 to Kovno Governorate. Formal abolition in 1924 by Soviet authorities.

Demographics

At the time of the Russian Empire Census of 1897, Shavelsky Uyezd had a population of 237,934. Of these, 70.7% spoke Lithuanian, 14.3% Yiddish, 6.3% Polish, 4.9% Latvian, 2.2% Russian, 1.0% German and 0.4% Belarusian as their native language.[1]
