Shameel Chembakath (Association football manager)

Shameel Chembakath (born 12 January 1986) is an Indian former professional footballer and football manager who last worked as the manager of the Under-15 team of Kerala Blasters.[1][2]

Playing career

Shameel started his youth career in Jharkhand by playing for SAIL Football Academy.After spenting 5 years there he was signed by Viva Kerala in 2004.[3] He spent one year there before signing for Vasco Sports Club Goa in 2005.He was signed by the Kolkata based club Mohammedan S.C in 2007 for the 2007-08 season .[4][5] In 2008 Bengal Mumbai FC signed him for their 2008-09 squad. Shameel was called for Indian national football team camp in 2007 for the pre olympic qualifier competitions, but didnt made it to the final squad. Due to injury problems he was forced to retire from professional football in 2009.

Managerial career

After retiring at the age of 24 ,Shameel worked as the head coach of different schools across Kerala.It was in 2014 he started his career as a professional football coach.He signed as the head coach of the Prodigy football Academy which was in partnership with Kerala Blasters Football Schools.[6] Later in 2016 he signed for Muthoot Football Academy ,which was in association with Kerala Blasters .[7] Shameel got the AFC B Coaching License in 2017.[8] In the same year, Kerala Blasters decided to field their youth teams in Hero Elite League and Shameel was appointed as the head coach of the Under 15 team of the Blasters.[9][10] His first accomplishment as a coach came during the 2018-19 Juniors League as the Under 15 side of the Blasters reached the semi final of the tournament.[11] In 2019 self he got the AFC A Coaching License.[12] He also worked with the reserve team of Blasters as its assistant manager and is known for the development of players like Sahal Abdul Samad.[13][14] In 2019 the Under-15 players Yoihenba Meitei and Aman Sahni played under Shameel was called up for the India U-15 team.[15] In 2020 the reserve side of the Blasters won the 2019-2020 season of the Kerala Premier League.[16] Shameel also got some few chances to work as the assistant manager of the Kerala Blasters senior team towards the end of the 2018-2019 regular season.
