Sensational Janine (German: Josefine Mutzenbacher... wie sie wirklich war - 1. Teil) is a 1976 West German hardcore costume drama-sex comedy film directed by Hans Billian. The film is an adaptation of the anonymous novel Josephine Mutzenbacher on the life of the eponymous and fictional fin-de-siècle Viennese courtesan.

Background

Sensational Janine features director Billian's girlfriend Patricia Rhomberg in the title role. Billian gave her the role in part because she had the proper dialect for it.[1] It became the first pornographic film to feature a humorous Viennese German, which contributed significantly to its popularity among the German-speaking audience.[2]

Josefine is a Viennese teen very curious about sex. After she is deflowered by her neighbour Frau Reinthaler's lover Horak, she starts a very active sex life. Following her mother's abrupt demise, a relationship with her stepfather begins. A lodger blackmails the two with the accusation of incest and, revealed as a pimp, he makes Josefine become a prostitute working for him. Josefine then begins a career as a sex worker, with the goal to eventually become an upscale courtesan in Vienna.[3]

Synopsis

Josefine discovers her step parents having intercourse, and gives her step brother a handjob. While Josefine's stepfather is having sex with their stepmother in one room, Patricia performs sixty-nine with her stepbrother until her stepbrother climaxes.

Josefine becomes interested in sex, and she overhears Mr. Baker and Mrs. Peabody having sex. Full of sexual excitement, Josefine waits for the right moment. The time comes when Horak Hutcherson borrows her house to store his rum in the basement for his tavern. One day, her mother had pneumonia and had to be taken down to the hospital, and her stepbrother left to do his military services. While pretending to sleep, her stepfather has sex with her, and Josefine secretly enjoys this. This happens a few times, and Josefine finally breaks and has passionate sex with her stepfather. While having intercourse in the kitchen table, the lodger catches both of them, and blackmails Josefine to have sex with him in exchange for him not telling the public what happened.

At night, the lodger invites a woman, and Josefine, the guest, the woman, and the stepfather all engage in an orgy. The guest and the stepfather persuade Josefine to be an adult film star because of her new found skills, and Josefine performs a pornographic act with a man and woman. Josefine goes outside for a stroll, where a handsome man wants her for a ride to his mansion. In the middle of intercourse, Josefine breaks the fourth wall by stopping midway and tells the audience if they want to see more of her go watch her newest film coming soon, and she makes the man climax by giving him a handjob.

Legacy

American pornographic film critic Jim Holliday has described this film as "easily the best and most accurate of several films based on the life and adventures of legendary Viennese madam Josephine Mutzenbacher" and his "all time foreign favorite" adult film.[4] Sensational Janine was "one of the most successful foreign x-rated films ever to cross the Atlantic."[5] The movie is "today seen as one of the best porns of all time",[1] as well as "possibly the best German pornographic film."[2]
