Among mountains, valleys and ravines, there lived different nations. All those communities were called DIAGUITAS, which means “people who live among the mountains”. They spoke the Cacan language and occupied a huge territory.
Each town or village was under the authority of a chief or “cacique”, who had their privileges and duties.
Particularly, the Calchaqui Valley was occupied by several tribes, each one of them had its own chief. In the region, where Seclantas is nowadays, there lived a tribe whose chief was called “Seclanta”
Seclantas is located in the center of the Calchaqui Valley, 150 km southwest from Salta city.
The road goes through the meandering Cuesta del Obispo and the “cardones”, turning left on route 42, where its magical colourful landscape is enjoyable until the visitor arrives to Seclantas.
Sitting under the trees while listening a story told by some artisan who is capturing his dreams in the warp of a tapestry or poncho, is really overwhelming.
This is the reason why it's called “Seclantas, cradle of the Salta poncho”
Population:
According to the last census (2011), there are 1800 people in Seclantas, Villa El Monte, Seclantas Adentro, San Isidro, El Colte and Montenieva. This amount is increased up to 3400 if we add Brealito and Finca Luracatao.
