History

The company was founded as the Scandinavian Tobacco Company in 1961.

During the reconstruction of 1990, all cigarettes manufacturing was gathered together in the new independent subsidiary company of House of Prince A/S and all cigars manufacturing was gathered together in Nobel Cigars A/S – now ST Cigar Group Holding B. V.

In February 2008, the cigarette and snus operations of the company were acquired by British American Tobacco.[3][4] The company retained its cigar, pipe tobacco, rolling tobacco, and tobacco bits businesses.

In December 2008, the decision was made to change the company's name to Scandinavian Tobacco Group.

On 26 April 2010, an agreement was signed to form a new company by combining all the tobacco business of Scandinavian Tobacco Group AB with the cigars and pipe tobacco business of Swedish Match AB (SM) (with the exception of its US mass market cigars).[5]

Following its establishment in 2010, the group acquired Lane Limited, a producer and brand owner of pipe tobacco, fine-cut tobacco and machine-made cigars in the United States, from Reynolds American Inc. in 2011.[6] Through the acquisition of Lane, STG acquired Captain Black (pipe tobacco and cigars), Bugler (fine-cut tobacco), Winchester (cigars) and other smaller brands. In 2013, STG acquired the Pipes and Cigars online retail business in the United States, followed by the acquisitions of Verellen,[7] a Belgian brand owner and producer of machine-made cigars, and the Torano handmade cigar brand, both in 2014.

In 2018, the group acquired Tampa, Florida-based Thompson Cigar for $62 Million (USD).[8]

In March 2019, the group announced it was laying off 112 employees and closing its Thompson Factory Outlet in Tampa, Florida.[9]
