Sami (name)

Sami (also Samy or Sammy) (Arabic: سامي, IPA: [ˈsæːmi, ˈsaː-, ˈsɑː-, ˈsɛː-], Finnish pronunciation: [sɑmi]) is a given name and surname of different origins and meanings, most prevalent in the Arab world and Scandinavia. When spelled in English, it can be spelled as Samy or Sammy and often mistakenly confused as the abbreviated English name Sammy.

Sami can be an Arabic name meaning "elevated" (الرفعة) or "sublime". (السُّمُوّ),[1] or a Turkish name, a Finnish male name derived from Samuel, or an American name abbreviated from Samantha or Samuel.

When used outside of English speaking countries – specifically amongst non-native Arabic speakers – the name Sami is confused with Samee (Arabic for 'one who hears') or Samir (another Arabic name altogether). However, it is in fact an unabbreviated Arabic name derived from the verb samaa (سما) and yasmo (يسمو) which means to transcend. This is from the root samaa (سما,سمو) which means to be high, elevated, eminent, prominent.[2]

The feminine version of this name in Arabic is Samiya or Samia (سامِيَة).

gollark: I agree, they sometimes make good changes somehow.
gollark: I mean, the random constants are *not* easily memorable, but you can just check what they are from a REPL.
gollark: I also wrote a chat program in about 30 lines of easily memorable python which uses that convenient IPv4 broadcast address, because I wanted a version of my multicast chat thing which was less ridiculously fragile. So you could also plausibly cheat using that.
gollark: You could actually just use the HTTP thing to download code off pastebin too I guess.
