Robert Uchida
Robert Uchida is a Canadian violinist.[1] In 2015 he is the Concertmaster of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.[2][3][4] He is also the Artistic Director of the Acadia Summer Strings Festival in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.[5] Uchida is a faculty member at Acadia University. He played a 1733 Carlo Bergonzi violin,[6] but currently plays an 1820 Lorenzo Ventapane violin.[7]
Early life and education
Uchida was born in Toronto. He studied at the University of Ottawa. He earned a graduate degree at the Manhattan School of Music.[8] He was a recipient of the school's Hugo Kortschak Award, and he won prizes in the Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition, the Canadian Music Competition, and the National Arts Centre Orchestral Bursary Competition.[8]
Career
Uchida performed as part of the National Academy Orchestra of Canada.[9] He taught at the Manhattan School of Music pre-college from 2004 to 2007.[8][10]
Uchida was an Associate Concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also been Guest Concertmaster of both the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic.
Uchida joined Symphony Nova Scotia in 2006,[8] and was named Concertmaster in 2008.[11][12][13] and continued to hold that position in 2012.[14]
In 2013, Uchida was hired as the Concertmaster of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.[4][15][16]
In 2015 Uchida performed at the Early Music Festival in Edmonton.[17]
