Military career

Educated at Ayr Academy, Lyon was commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in August 1943 and saw action in Europe during the Second World War.[1] After transferring to the Royal Artillery in 1947, he became commanding officer of 4th Light Regiment Royal Artillery in 1965 and in that role was deployed to Borneo during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation.[1] He went on to be Commander Royal Artillery, 1st Armoured Division in 1967, Director of Operational Requirements at the Ministry of Defence in 1971 and Director Royal Artillery in 1973.[1] His last appointment was as General Officer Commanding South West District in 1975 before retiring in 1978.[2]

He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in the 1976 New Year Honours.[3]

In 1951 he married Constance Margaret Gordon; they had one son and one daughter.[1] Following the death of his first wife, he married Rosemary Jane Allchin in 1992.[1]

He died on 13 November 2019 at the age of 96.[4]

gollark: Take cars. Lots of people have cars, which are giant heavy metal boxes designed to move at high speeds. Those are dangerous. Lithium-ion batteries can explode or catch fire or whatnot. Maybe future technology we all depend on will have some even more dangerous component... programmable nanotech or something, who knows. *Is* there a good solution to this?
gollark: That sort of thing is arguably an increasingly significant problem, since a lot of the modern technology we depend on is pretty dangerous or allows making dangerous things/contains dangerous components.
gollark: Or change them.
gollark: I'm not saying "definitely allow all weapons" (recreational nukes may be a problem), but that it would be nice to at least actually follow their own laws.
gollark: Do you think they would give you bear arms if you asked nicely?
