Early life

Noah Gale[1][2] was born in Queens, New York and grew up in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan.[3] He wrote his first rap in sixth grade[4] and began releasing music at age 15 in 2008 using the stage name, Nero. He released an early mixtape at that time.[5] In 2010, he was featured on the track "30,000" on the Casey Veggies album, Sleeping in Class.[6] Gale graduated from the High School For Environmental Studies in Manhattan in 2011.[7]

Career

In 2011, Gale began using the stage name, Ro Ransom.[5] He had also considered "Young Coyote" as an option for his pseudonym.[1] That year, he released the track, "Even The Devil May Cry"[5] and also appeared on the Ricky Hil song, "Varieties".[8] In 2012, he released a remix of the Purity Ring song, "Odebear". He followed that with his first mixtape using the Ro Ransom moniker, Ransomnia. That collection featured the single "Deadman Wonderland"[9] along with guest appearances from Trae tha Truth, Casey Veggies, 10ille, and Ricky Hil.[10] In 2013, Ransom released several songs, including "No Fucks Given" (using an Eminem sample),[11] "Forgiveness",[12] "Lesbian Girl" (using an Aaliyah sample),[13] and "Ebony & Ivory".[14] In July 2014, he released the song "S-Rank Manifesto"[15] which was a reference to his artist collective and label, S-Rank.[16]

In October 2014, Ransom released his second mixtape, Ro Ransom is the Future. The collection featured the single, "Anaconda Vise".[17] A few weeks after the album's initial release, Ransom released a second disc to Ro Ransom is the Future which featured 8 additional tracks including "Killa Cam" and "All Dogs Go To Heaven" (featuring QuESt).[18] In August 2015, he released the single "See Me Fall" (featuring Kensei Abbot)[19] which would go onto become a breakthrough hit for Ransom.[20] He released a music video for the song in December of that year[16] and a remixed version by Y2K came out in March 2016.[21] Together, both versions of the song have accumulated over 75 million streams across multiple platforms.[3]

Throughout 2016, Ransom also released several other tracks including "Talk Too Much",[22] "Donuts" (featuring Kensei Abbot),[23] "Invented Swag" (featuring Kensei Abbot and Nessly),[24] and "Doppelgänger".[25] Early in 2017, Ransom opened for Dua Lipa on her North American tour.[26][27] He also secured a writing placement on Khalid's American Teen album, co-writing the song "Let's Go".[28] In June of that year, he released the single "Prettiest" featuring Jazz Cartier.[29] Two months later, he was featured on the Cartier and Mike WiLL Made-It track, "Made a Mess".[30] In October 2017, he released an EP called Momentum. It featured the aforementioned "See Me Fall", "Prettiest", and "Doppelgänger".[31] That fall, he also toured with Witt Lowry.[32]

In April 2018, Ransom released the song "Floetry" (featuring Kensei Abbot),[33] which was the first single to be released on Same Plate Entertainment, a joint venture label with Sony Music. In June of that year, he released the single, "Wraith",[34] a song influenced by 1990s R&B acts like TLC and Destiny's Child.[20] The song would later get an official remix from Y2K in January 2019.[35] In September 2018, Ransom released his first project with Same Plate/Sony, an EP called Possessed.[36] The collection featured 8 tracks with "Floetry" and "Wraith" as singles. Including "Floetry", Kensei Abbot was featured on three songs on the EP.[37] In October 2018, Ransom was featured on the BLAISE track, "No More",[38] and, in May 2019, he was featured on the OnCue song, "Ritual".[39]
