Rika Maja

Rika Maja (1661–1757) was a Sámi shaman from Mausjaur. She was famous for her influence and wealth in the contemporary Sámi community; her name means 'Rich Maja'. She was the owner of over 3000 cattle, and the surrounding Sámis were referred to as her vassals. She is the subject of several legends. On a famous occasion during a time of drought, she allegedly successfully summoned rain by performing a magic ritual. After her death, she has been the subject of ghost stories and tales about her hidden treasure.
