The film's title is a reference to The Shining (1980), where the words "Red Rum" and "redrum" are anagrams for "murder".[4] Filming began in around early October 2018 and the title poster of the film was unveiled by actor Jayam Ravi on 1 October 2018.[5] The filmmakers roped in Kannada actress Samyukta Hornad in the female lead with the latter went onto make her debut as lead actress in a Tamil film.[2][6]
