Raj Mahtani

Raj Mahtani is a fifth generation jeweler, decedent of the brand Satramdas Dhalamal.[1] Incepted in 1880, the brand is one of the oldest and reputed jewelry houses in India.[2] The company started with designing jewelry for the kings, maharajas and their families. He belongs to one of the first families of Indian fine jewelry Satramdas Dhalamal, pioneers of wearable jewelry.[3] Mahtani gave a contemporary twist to the traditional Mughal designs of his family business, to create eclectic pieces and launched his own eponymous couture jewelry label in 2000.[4] He is India's first jewelry designer to showcase his collection at Paris Fashion Week. Mahtani has also participated in close to 75 bridal shows. In the past he has collaborated with international designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Roberto Cavalli and Indonesian designer, Biyan.[3][5] In 2020, the designer celebrates a 140-year-milestone of his rich family heritage with a fitting limited edition collection comprising 140 standout pieces.[6]

Career

A trained gemologist and designer,who studied in St. Paul's School, Darjeeling[7] Raj Mahtani set up his diamond trading company in 1990, Solitaire, in Antwerp. Almost after a decade for better creative fulfillment, he set up his eponymous high-end jewellery label, Raj Mahtani, in the year 2000.[8] Influenced by the Mughal period, the tzars of Russia and the Ottoman Empire, Mahtani draws inspiration from antique textiles, artwork and architecture.[3] He is India's first jewellery designer to go to Paris Fashion Week and showcase his work.[9] Apart from showcasing in PFW, Internationally Raj Mahtani has worked with Diane van Furstenburg, Roberto Cavalli and Biyan.[10] In India too he has collaborated with top courtiers like Tarun Tahiliani, Anamika Khanna and Manish Malhotra. The jewellery designer also retails in Singapore, Dubai and London along with retailing in India.[8]
In 2010, Mahtani showcased his jewellery in collaboration with designer Anamika Khanna at Delhi Couture Week.
In 2017, Raj Mahtani showcased his collection “Bridal Vanguardista” along with designer Manish Malhotra on Spanish National Day at ITC Sonar Bangla, Kolkata. The collection was a line with very large pieces with European and Mughal influences.[11]
In 2019, Mahtani, launched his latest collection 'Paris in Calcutta', when he closely observed the similarities between Paris and Calcutta, the whole grunge element and amid all of that, you have culture and music and political discourse.[12] Raj Mahtani’s Paris in Calcutta jewellery collection is a celebratory union of the world’s most iconic cities. Paris in Calcutta equates the beauty of the two cities by drawing parallels between the ambience, the architecture, the grunge, the art and the heritage.[13]

Bollywood & Raj

Raj styled Kiara Advani for Brides Today cover in his maximalist jewels. Kiara Advani donned Raj Mahtani's multiple signature pieces for the shoot.[14] Among other Bollywood celebs jewels by Raj Mahtani have been adorned by likes of Kareena Kapoor, Mira Rajput, Kangana Ranaut, Raima Sen and others.

Reflections

In 2020, the fifth generation jeweller penned his first book of poetry, 'Reflections'. Few were penned before the nationwide mandated lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak and some works came about while self-isolating.[15][16]

The anthology brings to life 12 light-hearted, relatable poems. The compositions in the e-book are represented by pictures of paintings from Mahtani’s expansive art collection.
