Protea pruinosa

The Protea pruinosa (burnished protea or frosted sugar bush), is a flowering shrub belonging to the Protea genus. The plant is endemic to Swartberg, from Towerkop to Meiringspoort in South Africa. 92% of protea species are found in South Africa.[1][2][3]

The shrub is dense and flat. It grows about 1.5 m in diameter and 50 cm tall. It blooms from January to February.

Life cycle

Fire destroys the plant, but the seeds survive. The seed is stored in a cap, released after a long interval. It spreads on the wind. The plant is uni sexual, meaning both sexes appear in each flower. Rodents pollinate the plants. Fruit is stored on the plant for some years.

Habitat

The plant grows on rocky ridges and mountain tops at altitudes of 1,800 - 2100 m.
