Pro Italia Galatina

Pro Italia Galatina (Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Pro Italia Galatina) is an Italian football club based in Galatina. They currently play in the Prima Categoria which is the seventh level in the Italian football league system and is organized by the National Amateur League.[1][2]

History

Founded in 1917 from a group of young people, it was born as a sports club where the main activity was athletics. The team also practiced cycling, horse-riding and of course football. The players of the team wear a white uniform with a black star on the chest. Football was introduced into the team only around the mid 1920s, reaching the title of regional 3rd division champion in the 1928-29 season. After the war the current stadium was built and named after Gustavo Giordano. In the 1964-65 championship, Galatina won the tournament and landed in Serie D but relegated the following year. They had to wait for 1980-81 season to return to this championship.

In the 80's under the presidency of Maglio, they entered professional football by participating in five Serie C2 tournaments, precisely from 1983 to 1988. Among the players of the experience of C2 were Cosimo Francioso and Luigi De Canio.[3] In 1989-90 season, Galatina came close to being promoted to the professional side, finishing second a few points from the top.[4]

In May 1992, they were relegated. In the 1993-94 tournament Pro Italia was fished out in the National Amateur Championship. Here they played for two years until the 1995-96 season before returning to the championship of excellence. In 1998, after taking over the sports title of the US Aradeo, they returned to Serie D, where they remained for four seasons, from 1998/1999 season to the 2001/2002 season.[5]
