Poovathur is a village in the Orathanadu taluk of Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India.

Demographics

As per the 2001 census, Poovathur West had a total population of 2086, with 987 males and 1099 females. The sex ratio was 1113. The literacy rate was 75.89.

Poovathur also contributed to nation for freedom struggle through Rengasamy (INA). He was one of the prime members of INA, and one of the strongest generals under Netahji and fought against the British army during the Second World War.

The following temples are in Poovathur: Uthirapathiyar Kovil (North Street), Kaliyamman Kovil (Sethurayar Street), Sokiyamman Kovil (Karruppan Street), and Sri Vinayagr Kovil (Pottalangudikadu). Pottalangudikadu is a large part of Poovathur.

At present Shanmugam is Poovathur's president.
