Ponevezhsky Uyezd

Ponevezhsky Uyezd (Поневежский уезд) was one of the subdivisions of the Kovno Governorate of the Russian Empire. It was situated in the northern part of the governorate. Its administrative centre was Panevėžys.

Demographics

At the time of the Russian Empire Census of 1897, Ponevezhsky Uyezd had a population of 222,881. Of these, 71.6% spoke Lithuanian, 12.2% Yiddish, 6.8% Latvian, 6.5% Polish, 1.9% Russian, 0.6% German, 0.1% Tatar and 0.1% Belarusian as their native language.[1]
