Career

From 1980 to 1984 he studied economics at University of Antwerp and was active as a student at KVHV Antwerp. He was editor-in-chief of the KVHV magazine Tegenstroom. In 1984, he started his career as a teacher in technical secondary education: first in Sint-Aloysius in Mortsel, then in the Antwerp school Sint-Eligius, which has since been transformed into the Scheppers Institute.

Volksunie

He started his political career in the People's Union (Belgium) and the Volksunie, but left that party in 1988, when the Third Phase of the State reform in Belgium started. The expansion operation led by Hugo Schiltz and Jaak Gabriëls also proved difficult to dissolve, mainly the election of the 'left ' parliamentary representative Herman Lauwers, the chairman of the VVKSM, from Brasschaat.[3]

Flemish People's Movement

Together with Jan Jambon he moved to the Flemish People's Movement (VVB). There he first became the party secretary from 1988 to 1989 and founded a VVB branch in Antwerp. In 1989 he became general chairman and remained in that position until 1998. Under Peter De Roover, the FVO opted for Flemish independence (with the conference of 24 April 1991: 'Our future in Europe: Flanders independent'), the European Union became a theme ('EU voting rights: yes, but ...') and attention shifted to Flemish Brabant (with the Komitee Stop Euro-Brussel and the intense collaboration with the Taal Aktie Komitee).[4]

In the mid-1990s De Roover engaged in the struggle for the political character of the Iron Pilgrimage Committee. He founded the Iron Pilgrimage Forum, among others with then Davidsfonds chairman Lieven Van Gerven. This forum ended in 1996 after politics were overtaken by the Working Group on Radicalization Iron Pilgrimage.[5]

On October 20, 2007, Peter De Roover was again elected political secretary by the General Assembly of the FVO, along with Eric Defoort as the new general chairman. He held this position until February 2013. From April 2013 he was chief politician of Doorbraak and managing director of the non-profit organization Stem in 't Kapittel. Peter De Roover also contributed opinion contributions to the newspapers De Standaard and De Morgen or to Knack. He also regularly appeared on the VRT news service to give his opinion in programs such as Terzake.

Chamber of Representatives (Belgium)

Peter de Roover contested for a seat in the Belgian House of Representatives in the federal elections on May 25, 2014. On the Chamber of Representatives list, he was awarded third place for the constituency of Antwerp  and was elected. On January 17, 2015, he was elected treasurer of his party.[6] In January 2016, he became group leader in the Chamber and left the post of treasurer.  He was noted in late 2018 by his frequent interventions on whether or not to approve the UN Migration Pact, which eventually led to N-VA leaving the government.[7][8] In the elections of 2019 he was a candidate again, as lijstduwer in Antwerp. He was reelected.[9][10]
