Zelenko returned to the Burton City Council in 2008 and serving until December 2010.[1] She ran for 26th District State Senator in 2010 but was unsuccessful. In November 2010, Burton Mayor Charles Smiley was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives 50th district seat. The Council pre-selected Zelenko prior to Smiley's resignation date to have a smooth transition.[3] In 2019, Zelenko announced she was not going to seek a third term as mayor.[5] On November 18, 2019, Duane Haskins was sworn in as Zelenko's successor.[6]
