Patel Sudhakar Reddy

Patel Sudhakar Reddy (died 23 May 2009) was a leader of the central committee of the Communist Party of India (Maoist).

Early life

He hailed from the village of Kurthiravulacheruvu, near Maldakal in Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh. Though was the son of a landlord, he was attracted to the proletarian revolutionary movement during his student life. Reddy started his revolutionary career as a member of Radical Students Union in Gadwal area. He passed engineering with gold medal from Osmania University.[1] Later he joined the CPI (M-L) People's War Group that later became the Communist Party of India (Maoist). He was involved in the assassination bid of former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh & Leader of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), N. Chandrababu Naidu.[2]

Politics

In 1983, Sudhakar Reddy moved to the Eturnagaram-Mahadevpur forest in north Telangana as commander of a guerrilla squad. Later his Party transferred him to Gadchiroli district until his arrest in 1992 in Bangalore and seven-year imprisonment.[2] After his release in 1998 he returned to revolutionary work in Dandakaranya and then Andhra Pradesh. In 2005 he was elected to his party's Central Committee as well as central military commission. He was known in the party as Suryam alias Srikanth alias Vikash also.

Death

Sudhakar Reddy was reported to have been killed in an encounter with armed forces of the Indian state in Warangal district on 23 May 2009. Another senior Maoist leader Venkatayya, a district committee member of the Warangal unit of the north Telangana zone, was also killed in the encounter.[1][2] The CPI(Maoist) has alleged that this was a premeditated and staged murder by the state and that Sudhakar Reddy was arrested in Nashik and was tortured and killed in Warangal district.[2][3]
