Two of the stores, Paper Plus and Take Note, sell books, stationery, cards, magazines and giftware, while Office Spot focuses on home office and business supplies.

The group had its beginnings in 1983 when five independent stationery retailers formed a buying cooperative.[2] A common branding followed and developed into a franchise. New members bought a share in the group.

Group Brands

Paper Plus

The Paper Plus brand mainly sells Books and Stationery. Some stores have a NZ Post and Kiwibank agency or a Lotto store. Currently Paper Plus has a combined income of over $100 million a year through the 100 stores between Kaitaia and Invercargill. In June 2007 the Paper Plus store at the Sylvia Park Shopping Centre in Auckland opened, this was the first store to feature the new look that began to be rolled out nationwide in July 2008. Local broadcaster and Newstalk ZB talkback host, Kerre Woodham is the group's book-reviewer. She publicizes the store and its products extensively, through advertisements in and out of the Paper Plus stores as well as on her radio show. The biggest Paper Plus store is located in Masterton.

Paper Plus has its own online and in-store adult contemporary radio station - Paper Plus Radio.[3]

Office Spot

Office Spot sells home office and business supply. The first stores were opened in 2007.[4]

Take Note

Take Note sells similar products to Paper Plus but are mainly smaller stores. There are 13 stores nationwide. Many Take Note stores include a NZ Post agency and Kiwibank service agency. The chain was an affiliate of the AA Smartfuel loyalty programme until 2016. However Take Note originally had around 70 stores, most stores have been converted to Paper Plus/Paper Plus Select stores or closed down.

Acquisitions

Books & More

Effective from September 1, 2005, Paper Plus (NZ) Ltd purchased the Books & More franchise chain for an undisclosed amount. This transaction increased the Paper Plus store count by 33 to 192 stores.[5]

Dymocks

After the Dymocks Booksellers slow exit out of the New Zealand book market,[6] Paper plus acquired some of the remaining stores that were left open after the closure of the Dymocks New Zealand head office.[7]
