His father late P.T. Chacko was a political stalwart in the Indian Politics especially from 1940 to 1964 August 1 i.e. till his death. Sri. P. T. Chacko was a member of Indian Constituent Assembly representing Travancore-Cochin from 1949. (The Constituent Assembly of India was formed for the purpose of drafting the Constitution of India. Following India's independence from Great Britain in 1947, its members served as the nation's first Parliament.) India became a Republic On 26 January 1950, and the first Lokh Sabha was constituted in 1952 in which P. T. Chacko was a member representing Meenachil Lok Sabha Constituency. In 1957, P. T. Chacko was elected as the first opposition leader of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. In 1960 he was again elected as a member of the second Kerala Legislative Assembly and become the Home Minister.

The Kerala Congress party is a registered State Political Party, registered in 1964. Since 2010 Mr. Thomas is the Chairman of one of the tiniest factions. Mr. P. C. Thomas was the Member of Lok Sabha for consecutive terms from 1989 to 2009 (20 years).i.e. from 9th Lok Sabha to 14th Lok Sabha (was also Union Minister of State for Law and Justice from 2003 to 2004) by affiliating with many political fronts including the right wing NDA. He is also the Chairman of ‘Karshaka Sanghatana Aikyavedi’, a Farmers' non-political organization which is a platform of several associations of various types of farmers’ organizations in Kerala including those of natural rubber farmers.[1]

Mr. P. C. Thomas was elected as member of 6th Bar Council of Kerala in 1986.

His first contest in General election was in 1987, from Vazhoor Legislate Assembly Constituency and at that time he failed. Later in 1989 he contested in the Lok Sabha election from Muvattupuzha Lok Sabha Constituency as the candidate of Kerala Congress (M) and he defeated Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate Mr. P. P. Esthos and Mr. P. J. Joseph (political stalwart), another Kerala Congress leader. From that election onwards till 2009 he consecutively represented the Muvattupuzha Lok Sabha Constituency in the Lok Sabha for 20 years. His last contest from that Lok Sabha Constituency was in 2004 and at that time he contested as the candidate of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and he defeated both the candidates of United Democratic Front (UDF) and LDF and that victory was a landmark victory in the political history of Kerala State.[2] However, Supreme court of India cancelled and disqualified the results in 2006 on the ground that he used his religious background to woo voters during the polls on May 10, 2004.[3]

Pursuant to the Delimitation Act, the Muvattupuzha Lok Sabha Constituency was abolished and after 14th Lok Sabha there is no Muvattupuzha Lok Sabha Constituency. Now Kerala Congress is in alliance with NDA and he is the National Committee member of the NDA. After his Lok Sabha term also, he is serving for the people especially among the various types of farmers, labourers, fishermen etc.

After his Lok Sabha term, he has filed about 15 public interest litigations as part-in-person, in the Honorable High Court of Kerala and Supreme Court of India, for protecting the various rights of the farmers, labourers, fishermen and common man and for their development in different spheres.

Some of the very important cases are described below :-

(1) W.P.(C) No. 28492 of 2014 – issue involved in this case was the poor situation of Natural Rubber farmers of India. In this case after hearing his arguments, the Hon’ble High Court by its Judgment dated 11 March 2015 directed the Government of India to hear Mr. P. C. Thomas before finalizing the policy matters with regard to the price of Natural Rubber in India.

(2) W.P.(C) No.2654 of 2012 - the main issue in this case was the wrong entry in the National Register Of Large Dams in 2009, because in that register, 4 dams situated in the land of the Kerala had been shown as Dams situated in the land of the Tamil Nadu. Those Dams are Mullaperiyar, Parambikulam, Thoonakkadavu and Peruvaripallam.[4] (Before filing the case he had approached the Govt. many times to correct the mistake, but didn't correct.) In that case the Honorable High Court of Kerala, by its Judgment dated 22 November 2012 directed the Government of India to correct the National Register Of Dams and to make necessary entry with regard to the said Dams stating that those are situated in the land of Kerala.[5]

(3) W. A. No 2880 of 2009:- in this case, the main grievance of Mr. Thomas was that by Judgment in W.P.(C) No 15135 of 2009 the rubber plantations and other crops coming under the category of plantation had been declared as non-agricultural activities and such Judgment was highly detrimental to the interest of various farmers in India, especially among coffee, tea, cashew and rubber. (Against that Judgment, the writ petitioner did not file appeal in time, though he filed very late after filing the case of Mr. Thomas). Under that circumstance after obtaining the leave of Honorable High Court, Mr. Thomas challenged the judgment in the writ appeal and got set aside W.P.(C) No15135 of 2009.

In 2006, when Finance Minister P. Chidambaram made an announcement that the Government of India will issue a commemorative coin dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Sree Narayana Guru in 3–4 months, P. C. Thomas suggested that coin' logo should be written both in Hindi and English.[6]

In 2019, P. C. Thomas announced that he will run for election again.[1]
