Out On The Floor is a single by Dobie Gray one of the most popular Northern Soul songs of all time. It has been referred to as the song that defines Northern Soul.[1][2]

Background

The song was released in May, 1966 on single "Out On The Floor" bw "No Room Too Cry" on Charger CRG-115.[3] It was originally released on the Black Magic label in 1965 (see record label).[4]

The song charted twice in the UK. The first time was in 1975 when it reached no 42, spending 8 weeks in the chart.[5] The second time was in 1983 when it reached no 95.[6]

In Nick Hornby's book Juliet, Naked, the song is referred to as the "National Anthem of northern".[7] It's also mentioned in the book Oil and Honey: The Education of an Unlikely Activist by Bill McKibben,[8] Last Days of Disco by David F. Ross,[9] and more.
