Laser eye surgery in the UK is dominated by three main companies Optical Express, Ultralase and Optimax which, in total, account for approximately 6% of clinics in the UK.[2]
History
Optimax was founded by Russell Ambrose in 1991 and he became the very first patient to receive treatment at Optimax.[3] Eleven years later, in 2002, Optimax performed their 100,000th laser eye surgery procedure.[4]
Nowadays, Optimax operates optical care clinics throughout the UK and has used laser eye surgery to correct the minor visual impairments of around 350,000 patients.[5]
Optimax were the first company to introduce Femtosecond laser, IntraLASIK and Schwind lasers.[6]
In April 2014 a complaint by Optical Express that the company had funded a protest website critical of Optical Express was dismissed by Nominet.[7]
