Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church
Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church (OPC) is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1949 as a mission of nearby Peachtree Presbyterian Church, the congregation initially met on the campus of nearby Oglethorpe University. The community soon purchased nearby land and built its own church, a facility which continued to expand over the next several decades.
The congregation of close to 300 is known in the community for its mission work (e.g. Food Pantry, Bargain Shop) and preschool.
Worship
A weekly service is held each Sunday beginning at 11 A.M. Led by the Rev. Mike Watson, each service is relaxed yet spiritually focused. Child care is provided during this time.
OPC often has special musical guests during the worship time. In the past they have hosted The Choral Guild of Atlanta, The Oglethorpe University Choir and many other talented performers.
Communion is celebrated approximately monthly, and follows the liturgical calendar. All Christians are invited to participate whether or not they are members of OPC.
After the worship service, refreshments are served in the Narthex of the church. This is a wonderful time to meet new friends and catch up with old ones.
Music
Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church has a long musical tradition. The Chancel Choir leads the congregation in hymns each week, in addition to singing an anthem and other musical responses. The Chancel Choir practices on Sunday mornings at 9:45am. The Handbell Choir leads worship monthly and on special occasions. The Handbell Choir practices on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm. Both choirs are directed by Nick Johns-Cooper, who also provides organ and piano accompaniment. All are welcome to participate in all aspects of music at OPC.
Outreach and compassion
OPC members are involved in many facets of service to the local community. These include the Bargain Shop, Food Pantry, Habitat Humanity, Fellowship Mission, and lending space for group meetings.
Bargain Shop
Members of the Church run this fundraiser, and all proceeds go to support the Food Pantry. Donations of used clothes and household items are collected year round, and three times each year the doors are open for anyone to come shop.
Food Pantry
Canned food and other non-perishable items are collected, sorted, and bagged by volunteers. The Food Pantry is open a few hours a week for members of the community in need of a sack of food to help feed their families.
Fellowship
There are many small groups that meet weekly or monthly and foster a family atmosphere. These include the Oglethorpe Women's Circles, Bible Study groups, and more.
