Odete Maria Belo

Odete Maria de Freitas Belo (born 10 October 1973 in Baucau, Portuguese Timor) is an East Timorese doctor and politician. Since May 2020, she is Minister of Health.

Career

Before her appointment she worked as executive director of Serviço Autónomo de Medicamentos e Equipamentos de Saúde (SAMES, Autonomous Service for Medicines and Health Equipment). From 2014 to 2015, Belo was head of the office of SEDA, a government institution for the decentralization of administration.

After the government reshuffle of 2020, she was appointed Minister of Health in the VIII Constitutional Government of East Timor,[1] being sworn in on 29 May. She replaced Rui Maria de Araújo as Minister of Health in the new government.

Since 2013, Belo is commissioner of the Comissão Nacional de Eleições (CNE, National Election Commission) of East Timor. In April 2019, she became vice president of CNE. Belo has been observer at the 2013 Nepalese Constituent Assembly election. In May 2014, she has been member of a technical team which provided monitoring and support during the second round of the presidential election in Guinea-Bissau.
