Ngangbam Shantikumar Meetei

Ngangbam Shantikumar Meetei'[1] is a natural bodybuilding athlete as well as a Professor from Manipur who is a citizen of Taiwan.[2] He is Mr. Asia champion as well as multiple INBA PNBA World champion,[3] which includes Mr. Asia, World Cup, Natural Universe and Natural Olympia. He is the first Asian who won Professional Natural Olympia titles in bodybuilding.

Early life

Ngangbam Shantikumar Meetei was born in Uripok Bachaspati Leikai, a locality in the capital of Imphal in Manipur, India, to Ngangbam Shellungba Meetei and Ngangbam Angoubi Leima.[4] The youngest of 10 children, Because of poverty and illiteracy as tenants, they moved from place to place looking jobs to feed the family full of children. Finally, they landed at Luwangsangbam and then to Kanglatongbi where Dr Shantikumar grew up and lived until 12 years old.

Education

He completed matriculation from the Tera Rural Institute at Tera Sapam Leirak, Manipur. After completing a B.A. from DM College, Imphal, Manipur in 1989, he enrolled at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and completed his Masters and one year M. Phil and Ph.D in Linguistics in 1998.[5]

Bodybuilding career

He was crowned Mr World 2013 at Zakynthos, Greece, on 7 July 2013.[6] Shantikumar won the gold medal in 40 to 49 age group and the silver medal in Open Men's Short class. He represented both Manipur and Taiwan in the Natural Olympia 2014.[7] In addition to his full-time teaching career, he has been doing bodybuilding and fitness for 30 years and has won a total of 22 international medals including 13 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals so far in international championships like Mr. Hong Kong Invitation, Mr. East Asia, Mr. Asia, Mr. World, Mr. World Cup, Mr. Universe; and Mr. Natural Olympia as an Elite Professional natural athlete. In 2014 and 2016, Dr Meetei became the first ever Asian to win the Natural Olympia titles as an amateur and Elite Professional athlete respectively. Before him, no Asian has ever won this title.

Apart from being a Professional Elite natural athlete, Dr Meetei is an international judge. Not only judging in the international stage, but he is also working as the President of both INBA TAIWAN as well as INBA ASIA continent to promote natural bodybuilding and fitness sports in the Asiatic continent to help people of all ages to stay healthy and fit and avoid steroids, hormones, drugs, and other unhealthy and illegal substances. As the promoter of natural sports, Dr Meetei has already organized three times state level championships in Manipur. And now in Imphal, Manipur, this July 27, he hosted the first-ever INBA's national level natural bodybuilding and fitness championship very successfully, opening a natural platform for all natural athletes to compete drug-free. He is not young anymore but still competing with full of energy and enthusiasm. This year, Dr Ngangbam Shantikumar Meetei will compete in the Natural Mr World Cup and 20th Natural Olympia in November at Glendale, California and Las Vegas, the USA respectively.

Personal life

Shantikumar is now a citizen of Taiwan.[8] He is working as an English Professor at De Lin Institute of Technology, Taipei.[9] He is the President of INBA Asia[10] and INBA Taiwan.[11] Shantikumar married Ng. Chen Nan Tai, from Taiwan, in December 1996. They have four children. His wife is an English teacher at Global Educational Institute in Taipei.[12]

He published his own autobiography in 2014, titled My Journey: A Landless Peasant's Son on the Top of the World.[13]
