New Testament Church (Hong Kong)

New Testament Church (新约教会 Xinyue jiaohui) is a Hong Kong and Taiwan based Christian New Religious Movement founded by the Hong Kong movie actress Kong Duen-yee (江端仪 1923-1966 Jiang Duanyi) then led by her daughter Zhang Lude (张路得, Ruth Chang).[1]

Zhang Lude later left the Church, and Hong Sanqi (洪三期), also known as Elijah Hong (洪以利亚), emerged as the main leader.[2] Hong founded a Holy Mountain retreat (圣山) and Stone Tablet Church (石牌教会) in Kaohsiung. The New Testament Church is currently based at Mount Zion in Southern Taiwan, which "is both a pilgrimage destination and nature-based utopian community of several hundred adherents" [3] and, the church believes, the setting for the impending Great Tribulation.

in 1988, Zuo Kun (左坤), a former leader of the Church, organized a splinter group known as The Blood and Water of Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit Full Gospel Evangelistic Band(血水圣灵全备福音布道团), or The Church Rebuilt by the Holy Spirit’ (圣灵重建教会), and in 1989 started clandestine missions to Mainland China.[2]

Jiang taught a Pentecostal theology but her insistence that her was the only true church led to the New Testament Church being criticized as a cult both in Taiwan and China. Hong added additional claims, insisting that Jiang and himself were the end-time prophets predicted in the Book of Revelation and that Mount Zion in Taiwan was the exact place of Christ's imminent return. Zuo Kun's splinter branch believes that the true end-time prophet, with a role parallel to the one of Moses, is Zuo himself.[2]
