NS Class 8800

The Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) Class 8800 was a class of ex-British War Department Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0STs formed when NS bought 27 of them just after the Second World War. They had been built by the Hunslet Engine Company (12), W. G. Bagnall (3), Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns (RSH) (6) and Hudswell Clarke (6).

In addition, there were a few austerities that ended up in industrial use in the Netherlands, and some of the NS engines joined them after their work for NS was done.

Preservation

Three ex-NS locomotives have survived along with several sister Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0STs which did not belong to NS. No. 8826 is preserved at the Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij (ZLSM) in Limburg. No. 8811 is preserved at the Stoomstichting Nederland (SSN) in Rotterdam (this loco is steamed for the first time in June 2010). No. 8815 has been repatriated to Great Britain. Named Walkden it is currently operational (as of 2011) on the Ribble Steam Railway.
