Biography
Qasmi was born on 26 September 1954.[3] His father Muhammad Salim Qasmi was former rector of Darul Uloom Waqf, Deoband, whilst his grandfather Qari Muhammad Tayyib remained vice-chancellor of the Darul Uloom Deoband for about half century.[4][5]
Qasmi graduated with traditional dars-e-nizami from Darul Uloom Deoband in 1975[6] and studied intermediate classes in private from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). He got a BA and MA degree from AMU in private and acquired master's degree in Kulyah ash-Sharia from Al-Azhar University.[7]
Qasmi joined Darul Uloom Waqf, Deoband as a teacher in 1983 and later took administrative responsibilities as well. In the seminary, he teaches books of Hadith including Sahih Bukhari and Tirmidhi along with other primary books.[6][7] He served the seminary as deputy rector for 12 years[3] and was appointed as rector by the Advisory Board on 3 September 2014 [8] He is also a member of the executive council ofAll India Muslim Personal Law Board since 2007.[7]
Qasmi maintains the view that knowledge is a unit and it is wrong to divide it as Islamic and Non-Islamic. He argues that in Islam, knowledge can be grouped as profitable (نافع) and non-profitable (غیر نافع). [9]
