Miami New Drama

Miami New Drama is a nonprofit theater company located in Miami, Florida. The theatrical organization produces diverse and multicultural works with artists across the United States.[1]

History

Miami New Drama was co-founded in 2016 by Venezuelan playwright and director, Michel Hausmann, and playwright, director, and Medal of the Arts winner, Moises Kaufman[2]. The company's debut production, The Golem of Havana, opened at the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach on January of 2016[3]. Following that debut production, Miami New Drama took over operations of the Colony Theatre on October 1st of 2016[4]. By 2017, Miami New Drama had received two Knights Arts Challenge grants from the John S. and James L. Knight foundation, one in support of its multilingual production of Thornton Wilder's Our Town[5] and another for the development of a documentary theatre piece based on the Cocaine Cowboys documentaries[6]. In 2018, Miami New Drama, in collaboration with artist Lileana Blain-Cruz, was awarded $150,000 as winners of Knight New Work Miami 2018, funding a stage adaptation of Edwidge Danticat's "Create Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist at Work."[7]

As of 2020, under the leadership of Artistic Director, Michel Hausmann, Miami New Drama has produced over a dozen theatrical productions at the Colony Theatre.[8]

Past productions include:

  • A Wonderful World (2020)

A world-premiere musical with an original book by playwright and TV writer, Aurin Squire, directed by Tony-Award nominee[9] Christopher Renshaw, featuring music by Louis Armstrong.[10]

  • The Cubans (2020)

A world-premiere play written by Cuban-American playwright, Michael Leon, directed by Victoria Collado.[11]

  • The Bridge of San Luis Rey (2019)

Based on Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, was adapted for the stage and directed by Obie Award-winning[12] playwright and actor, David Greenspan.[13]

  • Gente Ociosa (2019)

A world-premiere adaptation of Anton Checkhov's Uncle Vanya, written by Venezuelan playwright, Karin Valecillos. It was directed by Miami New Drama's Artistic Director, Michel Hausmann, and starred an all Venezuelan cast.[14]

  • Viva La Parranda! (2019)

A world-premiere musical developed by Betsayda Machado y La Parranda El Clavo in collaboration with the director, Juan Carlos Souki.[15]

  • Confessions of a Cocaine Cowboy (2019)

A world-premiere play based on the documentaries, Cocaine Cowboys and Cocaine Cowboys 2, by Billy Corben. This play is a documentary theatre piece co-written by Billy Corben and journalist, TV Writer, and playwright, Aurin Squire. It was directed by Miami New Drama's Artistic Director, Michel Hausmann.[16]

  • Fake (2019)

A world-premiere play written by Cuban-American and local Miami playwright, Carmen Pelaez, and directed by Carl Andress.[17]

  • One Night in Miami (2018)

Written by Kemp Powers, and directed by Carl Cofield.[18]

  • Puras cosas maravillosas (2018)

A Spanish adaptation of Duncan Macmillan's Every Brilliant Thing, directed by Michel Hausmann, and starring Venezuelan Television host and comedian, Erika de la Vega.[19]

  • The Album (2018)

The first performance of a new work-in-progress presented by Tectonic Theater Project, written and directed by Moises Kaufman.[20]

  • Queen of Basel (2018)

A world-premiere play written by Hilary Bettis, commissioned by Miami New Drama, and directed by Michel Hausmann.[21]

  • The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity (2018)

2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama, produced in collaboration with Asolo Repertory Theatre, written by Kristoffer Diaz.[22]

  • Our Town (2017)

The first multi-lingual production of Thornton Wilder's Our Town[23], directed by Michel Hausmann. Spanish and Creole translations written by Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz and Jeff Augustin.[24]

  • Terror (2017)

The American premiere of Ferdinand Von Schirach's Terror, directed by Tony-Award nominee[25] Gregory Mosher.[26]

  • A Special Day (2016)

A Play Company and Por Piedad Teatro's production. The play is based on una giornata particolare by Ettore Scola and Ruggero Maccar, and adapted for the stage by Gigliola Fantoni. The play was directed by and co-starred Ana Graham and Antonio Vega.[27]

  • The Golem of Havana (2016)

Musical written and directed by Michel Hausmann, with music by Salomon Lerner, and lyrics by Len Schiff. The play opened at the Colony Theatre after its world-premiere at Barrington Stage Company[28] and its run at La MaMa[29].[30]

Leadership

As of 2020, Michel Hausmann is the Artistic Director of Miami New Drama. Nicholas Richberg serves as Managing Director, Jessica Kaschube as General Manager, Claudia Urdaneta as Director of Programming, Vyana Preti as Director of Education, and Steven Nuñez as the Operations and Production Manager.[31]
