History
The site selected had previously been occupied by a public house known as "The Crown".[1] The new building, which was designed by A. Green in the Modernist style, was developed by Bernard Sunley & Sons and opened as "Crown House" in 1962.[2] The 15-storey building, which is 49.4 metres (162 ft) high,[2] was initially used as commercial offices and for postal sorting.[1] Many of the departments of the London Borough of Merton, which had previously been located at Wimbledon Town Hall, moved into the building in 1985[3] and, after a new council chamber and library extension had been built, it became the new Civic Centre for Merton in 1990.[1]
