History and background

The museum was opened on 14 April 2011 by Henrik Knudsen (da). The official opening took place the day after, by the mayor of Randers Henning Jensen Nyhuus (da), the American ambassador James P. Cain and the singer Suzi Quatro.[1] It is twice as big as Graceland in Memphis, from where the outside is nearly a straight copy.[2]

The museum has a collection of about 6,000 pieces,[3] with an estimated value of 1.5 million euro.[2] Next to that, a restaurant in American style and a fan shop have been established.[3]

Memphis Mansion is in the top 50 of Danish attractions.[3] In 2015 it attracted 130,000 visitors.[4]

Name change

Knudsen registered the name Graceland Randers in 2006, about five years before the opening in 2011. In 2015 a lawsuit was filed against him for unlawful use of the name of Graceland. The Sø- og Handelsretten (Maritime and Commercial Court) justified the claim of the heirs in September 2016 and imposed an indemnification of 500,000 Danish krones (circa 75,000 dollar). Prior to the judgement the name was changed to Memphis Mansion. The claim that counterfeit articles of Elvis had been sold, was declared unfounded.[3]

gollark: Loads do now, flash storage is very fast.
gollark: Actually, I don't think you need an overclocked one.
gollark: Most modern things will.
gollark: It's part of a more complex system, but basically:- Lasers (from Plethora) were on ComputerCraft turtles (robot things), which could fire them in arbitrary directions- The turtles ran a program which connected to a relay-type service I run on my web server, which let them receive commands like "fire at this position" or "fire in this direction"- That relay service passed commands from clients to turtles and the results back to said clients- The Python script connected to the MC server's dynmap (popular service for web maps for Minecraft servers) web API, which, among other things, provides positions of players, and sent commands to fire at the reported position of players.
gollark: Which aren't particularly big, but somewhat useful.
