Medical deemed universities

In India, a Deemed university is an institution that has attained status of university in particular area of specialization recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC)[1] on recommendation of statutory council (for example Medical Council of India (MCI)[2] Delhi for medical education, All India Council for Technical Education[3] Delhi for technical education, Dental Council of India[4] Delhi for dental education, Council of Architecture[5] Delhi for architecture and design education, Central Council of Homoeopathy[6] Delhi for homeopathic medical education, Central Council of Indian Medicine[7] Delhi for education in Indian system of medicine, Indian Nursing Council[8] Delhi for nursing education, National Council for Teacher Education[9] Delhi for education in teacher training, Distance Education Council[10] Delhi for distance education, Pharmacy Council of India[11]) hence Medical deemed university means a medical institution attains the status of university by UGC in area of medical sciences as specialisation on recommendation of Medical Council of India to award degrees and diplomas in medicine.

Autonomy

  1. it able to conducts its own courses and curriculum, syllabus etc.
  2. it introduces innovative programmes and advances the higher education
  3. there will be advanced learning
  4. it enjoys more autonomy with MCI in medical education.

Contribution

In recent years, medical deemed universities made many contributions in medical education, especially in accident and emergency medicine[12] Sri ramachandra university[13] was first university to introduce M.D (Accident & Emergency Medicine)[14] since the program is not under MCI purview[15] because accident and emergency medicine is not a specialty as per the IMC act but a M.D degree awarded by Sri Ramachandra University is recognised by MHRD[16] and AIU[17] since Sri Ramachandra University is a member of the association of Indian universities AIU[18] it will be recognised for higher studies and jobs. Similarly Vinayaka Mission University[19] Salem introduced this program and made an off-shore campus in Thailand[20] to offer an international program in medicine(MBBS[21]) under UGC recognition as per MCI norms and similarly MAHE has made an offshore campus in Malaysia to offer an international program in medicine.
