Meat Industry Association of New Zealand


The Meat Industry Association of New Zealand (MIA) is a voluntary trade association representing New Zealand meat processors, marketers and exporters. The MIA is an incorporated society which is owned by its members. The MIA represents companies’ supplying the majority of New Zealand sheep meat exports and all beef exports.

MIA membership

60 processing plants throughout New Zealand are MIA member companies. Each year these plants process approximately 22 million lambs, 3.9 million sheep 3.8 million cattle and calves. Over 1 million tonnes, equating to 85% of this production, is exported to approximately 120 international destinations.

MIA has representatives throughout the meat industry supply chain. This include packaging firms, shipping lines, ports, energy and insurance providers, road transporters, technology companies, specialist product exporters and research providers.

MIA directorships

The MIA holds directorships in industry research; MIRINZ Inc,[1] generic market development; the Meat Promotion Group, the Meat Biologics Consortium and its associated Meat Biologics Research Company, Beef & Lamb New Zealand Ltd, industry training organisation; NZITO, Ovis Management Ltd (OML),[2] Ovine Automation Ltd (OAL),[3] and the Shippers' Council.

MIA subsidiaries

The MIA has a wholly owned subsidiary, OML. The OML provides a programme promoting control of Cysticercus ovis (sheep measles) in livestock.
