Summary
Mészáros discusses Karl Marx's theory of alienation with reference to Marx's Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844. He explores the influence of philosophers such as Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Ludwig Feuerbach on Marx.[1]
Publication history
Marx's Theory of Alienation was first published by The Merlin Press in 1970.[2]
Reception
Marx's Theory of Alienation received the Deutscher Memorial Prize in 1970.[3] The book established Mészáros's reputation in the English-speaking world.[4] However, the book has received criticism from the political theorist Norman Geras and the political scientist David McLellan.[5] Geras described the book as an example of the way in which Marxists have illogically denied that there is such a thing as human nature even while engaging in analysis of Marx that depends on the concept of a human nature.[5] McLellan described the book as a good account of the continuity in Marx's thought, although an obscurely written and awkwardly constructed one.[6]
